Cholesterol and triglycerides
Cholesterol and triglycerides are two types of lipids (fats).
The cholesterol is crucial in building cells membranes and in producing a few essential hormones. The triglycerides represent a chain of fatty acids and they provide the cells with the energy they need for proper function.
There are two sources of lipids: food and endogenous sources (for example, when they are produced in the body). Cholesterol and triglycerides are mostly found in foods from animal sources and saturated fats. This kind of lipids are absorbed in the intestine and then through the blood they travel to the liver, where they are processed. One of the crutial functions of our liver is to provide the body organs with cholesterol and triglycerides. The body organs can’t function without these lipids. The liver packs the cholesterol and the triglycerides together with proteins in small compounds named lipoproteins. These compounds enter the blood flow and in that way they are transferred into the body cells. The cells use as much of these lipids as they need.
What are LDL and LDH?
When the LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) levels are high, LDL accumulates in the blood vessels and reduces their elasticity. This condition may lead to stroke or heart attack.
